Preventing Identity Theft

  • Do not respond to unsolicited requests for your Social Security number (SSN) or any of your financial data.
  • Avoid easy-to-figure-out passwords and personal ID (PIN) codes.
  • Do not give out personal information over the telephone or via the Internet unless you initiated the contact. We will never request that you provide confidential information such as a password or Social Security number or other sensitive information via telephone or e-mail.
  • Don’t include personal information such as your Social Security number or driver’s license number on your pre-printed checks.
  • Memorize all Personal Identification Numbers (PINs), such as your ATM card PIN and online passwords. Do not write these numbers down or keep them in your wallet or purse, and do not share them with anyone.
Protect Your Accounts
  • Store new and cancelled checks in a secure place.
  • Verify all credit card and bank statements for accuracy.
Protect Your Mail
  • If you stop receiving bills, statements or other monthly mailings, contact the issuing company immediately.
  • Promptly collect all incoming mail. Use a locking mailbox, if possible.
  • Always put outgoing mail in a U.S. Postal Service mailbox, not your home mailbox.
  • Before discarding, shred or cut up credit cards, ATM receipts, pre-approved credit offers and credit card convenience checks you receive, but do not plan to use.
Protect Your Computer
  • Avoid using automatic login features that save your user name and password; always log off when you’re finished.
  • Install virus protection on your computer and make sure it is updated on a regular basis.
  • Install and use a firewall on your personal computer, especially those connected to the Internet through high-speed DSL or cable modems. A firewall helps prevent hackers from accessing your computer.
  • Guard your passwords and PINs that allow you access to your credit card, bank and phone accounts. Avoid using easily available information such as your mother’s maiden name, phone number or Social Security number.
  • Use only secure sites when making online purchases. Secure pages begin with "https".
Stay Alert

If routine financial statements stop arriving in a timely manner, or if you are denied credit for no apparent reason, investigate further. These unusual circumstances could be the result of identity theft.

If You Are a Victim
  • Contact your bank and report the identity theft.
  • If your account is with our bank, contact us at the phone number listed on your statement.
  • If you believe your accounts have been tampered with or that fraudulent accounts have been opened in your name, close these accounts immediately. This includes your ATM card, debit card or electronic fund transfers .
  • File a report of identity theft with the local police. Be sure to ask for a copy of the police report, as this may be needed by credit card companies and others to remove the debts caused by identity theft.
  • Contact the major credit bureaus and have a short or long-term fraud alert placed on your file. This requires creditors to verify your identity before opening any new accounts in your name or changing any existing accounts. Request bi monthly copies of your credit report until your case is resolved (free to fraud victims).
  • Contact credit card companies and other creditors to notify them of potential fraud. Follow up all phone calls with a letter of confirmation and keep copies of all correspondence. Close any accounts that have been tampered with and open accounts under new numbers and passwords.
  • Report the criminal activity to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). Call the toll-free hotline at 1-877-ID THEFT (1-877-438-4338) to speak with an identity theft counselor. You can also enter information about your complaint into a secure FTC online database at www.consumer.gov/idtheft. Your information may be shared with other law enforcement agencies investigating identity theft.
  • Review all your account statements carefully. Identity theft takes time to resolve; any discrepancies should be reported immediately.
